Under the Olive Tree
Project Summary:
Under the Olive Tree (UOT) is a Palestinian
affairs radio program that broadcasts weekly and is produced by a radio collective that advocates a social justice platform
to uphold the rights of Palestinian people. Through advocacy, solidarity
building, and the promotion of Palestinian identity, culture and history, UOT
works to support and protect Palestinian human rights both locally in the US
and Canada as well as internationally.
By providing the space,
equipment and the know-how of radio production to Palestinian youth from the
US,
Canada,
and
Palestine,
UOT empowers collective members to produce content that accurately represents
the Palestinian community. Through alliances with various radio stations and
grassroots broadcasters in the
US,
Canada and
Palestine, UOT members can train and access
equipment to file reports on the Palestinian communities around them. In
Canada, our collaboration with Campus and Community radio stations allows any of our volunteers to have access and training
at the nearest campus station to them.
Since November 2005, UOT has
featured coverage of organized events for
Palestine
in North America, plus aired interviews with the world's leading human rights advocates and experts
on
Palestine.
The guests have included: Hanan Ashrawi, Ali Abunimah, George Rashmawi
(all Palestinians); Simona Sharoni, Gideon Levy, Norman Finkelstine (all Jewish
or Israeli); plus Phyllis Bennis and Robert Fisk. UOT also demonstrates for its
listeners the use of Palestinian art as a tool of resistance by airing music or
poetry that embodies the reality of being a Palestinian and offers an
entertaining and beautiful sample of Palestinian existence.
Distribution Initiatives:
Since November 2005 UOT has been airing
every Thursday 11am till noon on CKUT 90.3fm Radio McGill in
Montreal. The target audience is the English
speaking population of
North America. The show
aims to influence public opinion and government policies towards the
Palestinian problem and to highlight work being done by various community and
activist groups.
By drawing collective members from groups
working on
Palestine,
UOT offers access to media production. UOT's content is largely drawn from the
efforts of social justice organizations allowing them to reach a wider
audience. Many ongoing campaigns and initiatives have already benefited from
this arrangement, including the "Israeli Apartheid Week" held by SPHR and the
Arab student collective in Canada, the US, and England. We have also highlighted within the program
several lecture tours hosted by various organizations.
The show is currently being distributed on
the internet by www.ckut.ca, www.sphr.org, www.radio4all.net, www.humanrightsmedia.org, and www.electronicintifada.net among
others. Many community and solidarity groups are also distributing UOT on their
mailing lists; including Al-Awda (the Right of Return Coalition) in the
UK, US and
Canada,
the National Campus Community Radio Association (NCCRA) in
Canada, and the Grassroots Radio Coalition in the
US.
The program is an effort to send three Palestinian radio
programmers from
Canada to
intern with independent media institutions in
Palestine
for a period of 6 weeks as well as to bring two Palestinian radio programmers
from
Palestine to
Canada as interns for the same
period.
The Canadian side of the program is organized by, Under the
Olive Tree (UOT), a Palestinian-Canadian radio collective, and CKUT Radio
McGill in
Montreal,
the coordination base for UOT. On the Palestinian end of the program, the
internships are coordinated by two institutions; I'lam the Palestinian-Israeli
media center in
Nazareth
within the 1948 territories and the Independent Middle East Media Center (IMEMC),
a Palestinian initiative based in Ramalah within the 1967 territories.
In Palestine
The program will send two Palestinian radio programmers
residing in
Canada to
Palestine to intern at I'lam
for 3 weeks. During this portion of the
internship, they will file reports on Palestinians living under direct
Israeli-apartheid rule. The interns will then work at the IMEMC for 3 weeks, reporting
on the situation of Palestinians living under military occupation.
I'lam and IMEMC would be responsible for preparing a
sufficient work agenda for the interns whereby the work provides a service to
all the organizations involved and allows the interns maximum exposure to the
situation on the ground.
In Canada
The program will send two Palestinian radio programmers
residing in
Palestine to intern at various radio
stations in
Canada,
including CKUT, for a period of 6 weeks.
The UOT collective will be responsible for preparing a
sufficient work agenda for the interns whereby the work provides a service to
all the organizations involved and provides the interns with maximum exposure
to the situation of the Palestinian diaspora community.
Work Required of Interns
Interns will be expected to file a minimum of 1 radio report
a week to be used by all the institutions involved. They will also be required
to file 1 article of 1500 words a week to be published in print and
electronically in various outlets. Daily
tasks will also be scheduled by the host organizations.
Selection and Criteria of Interns
In
Canada,
a committee coordinated by the UOT collective will select the two interns,
while in
Palestine
both of I'lam and IMEMC will be responsible for nominating one intern each. All
applicants must have ample experience in: radio interview techniques, portable
recording, digital audio editing, internet uploading resources, as well as
knowledge of Palestinian history and politics. They also must have experience
in producing radio content. All applicants must identify as Palestinian
irrespective of their sex, religion, ethnic background or nationality. Applicants
will be required to submit a CV, statement of intent, and an audio CD of works
produced.
